Our mission

Core Responsibilities

The OFM oversees several critical functions:

  • Fire Code Enforcement: Ensuring compliance with local and state fire codes in all commercial and residential structures.

  • Plan Review: Evaluating construction and system plans for fire safety compliance.

  • Inspections: Conducting inspections for new constructions, renovations, and existing buildings.

  • Fire Investigations: Determining the origin and cause of fires, including arson investigations.

  • Public Education: Offering training and educational programs to improve community fire safety awareness.

Community Engagement & Public Education

The OFM actively engages with the community through:

  • Hands-Only CPR Training: Providing free training sessions to teach life-saving CPR techniques.

  • Emergency Medical Services Presentations: Educating the public on common health-related issues and emergency response.

  • Fire Apparatus Tours: Offering tours of fire trucks and engines during community events.

These programs aim to enhance public knowledge and preparedness in fire and life safety.

Historical Background

Established in 1858 as the Fire Inspector, the office was created to assist volunteer fire companies and enforce fire ordinances. Over time, its responsibilities expanded, leading to the formation of the Fire Investigation Bureau in 1938 and the official creation of the Fire Marshal’s Office in 1958. Today, the OFM continues to uphold its legacy of fire prevention and safety in Baltimore.
